The 2.5 times RMS power requirement is the point at which power transfer occurs with the least loss, aka less heat and power draw for the same quality of sound. Wikipedia gives the equations if your working with an unusual resistance (ohm) load.
Underpowered amps blow speakers because they clip when trying to sustain the power output needed to drive the speakers. Its the clipping that causes the speakers to get upset as its basically pushing the cone out and holding it there. Doing this by hand is also bad ;)
