| From the Where2sing.com forum: In normal business, it's been prudent to talk about the lifetime value of a customer - the idea of profit being measured against a one-off sale disappeared somewhere back in the eighties or before. And this 'lifetime value' precedes a ton of business philosophies, particularly the way that an eduring relationship is built such that it takes a lot to lose a customer - otherwise the business tends to be competing on lowest price, and there's always someone lower to which the customer can defect... maybe not today, but soon.
Applying this to customers of a bar, it's strange to see such a deeply entrenched management philosophy disregarded by so many establishments that are, paradoxically, bemoaning the loss of customers to other forms of social entertainment. Now, surely these customers wouldn't be defecting because their social habit is being broken by their supplier just at the time at which these people have holidays, would it?
I know that people need holidays, and even the staff of pubs needs holidays - but, hey, this is a service industry.
Some of the longest running karaoke, for example Covent Garden in Sydney, run karaoke come rain or shine. Coincidence, I wonder?
