Re the latest ‘In The News’ article. I prefer to not go to venues that have prizes that might attract money chasers.

The purely selfish part of me says ‘If you’ve got it, why not chase the money?’, but the other part of me says that karaoke should be for the ‘average person’ that just wants to have a go and a bit of fun.

While I certainly appreciate and openly acknowledge a great performance, I do wonder what the ‘cost’ would be for a great performance from a roving (no money over the bar) money chaser is i.e. how many ‘average’ (money over the bar) punters have just been scared off and intimidated from having a go? The main reason I go to karaoke is I enjoy seeing people from all walks of life and levels of talent just having a go at their favourite songs; if I can get a song or two in myself, that’s just a bonus for me. I find the most entertaining performances are not polished, pitch and note perfect, but are those where you can see the singer is simply having a great time – seeing others having fun is infectious and never ceases to bring a smile to my face. That’s karaoke entertainment in my book, and perhaps I am not alone in thinking that this ‘rawness/fun’ factor is what brings the regular crowds in week in, week out to their local karaoke gig.

If I want to see money chasers perform (and competing on a more level and fair playing field I might add also), I will head along to a venue that for example is hosting KWC heats.

For my part, if I have a sing and the crowd enjoy it, some applause and a ‘well done’ slap on the back is enough reward for me.
