From the Where2sing.com forum:

Those biases are all still coming through in the posts since I posted. You can only see it through your own eyes and not through other people's and that is why karaoke will always remain as it is rather than opening up to new audiences. You all pay out on good singers and say that karaoke is for the non-singer. That is how you make many people who are better singers feel. Your 'lines' are all about karaoke being a certain level and therefore you put down others who may want to hear better singers on such nights as comps and may pay money over the bar. You will always keep certain people away from karaoke events because of these biases. What is a regular? What if someone cannot afford to buy food and drinks at a venue? Should they be excluded from entering? Should they be not allowed to have any entertainment? What if a person works and can only attend a venue once in a blue moon? What if a person's personality is such that they would rather travel to different places and get the novelness of a new venue rather than attending some show all the time. As it is, venues try to make money but they also have to realise that they are providing entertainment for everyone regardless of whether people can pay for food or drinks or not. What hosts and so called regulars have to realise is that it is not your venue. A venue is open to anyone regardless. Just because you spend money there does not make you higher on some class system.
Karaoke comps in the main are not paid for by the venue to give money to their regulars. It is to bring new people into a venue. If that means good singers come and others get to watch them, then why not applaud their talent and be happy you got to watch them. There is no entitlement for so called regulars to have the prizes. Why not just keep a tab of how much each karaoke patron spends and then have a frequent flyer points system. There would be some so called regulars that spend $5 a night and others that spend $100s. Does that mean one is more entitled to comp prizes than others? And therefore their economic situation is a determinant. You are all so biased about things. When you realise that the territory you think is yours is not the better. Appreciate everyone for what they do and whenever they attend any venue, whether they win the prizes or are poor or not. Please think about it and not ostracise!
