| From the Where2sing.com forum: Aria charts (top 40) are distribution sales not actual sales of the public. The record companies and retailers perceive that an album will sell a certain amount and so they have distributed to them certain amounts of albums by the artist. This counts in the top 40 but it is not a reflection of the true sales. The retailer then tries to market heavily those albums that they have a large supply of by advertising and relevant positioning in store. For many albums there are losses for the retailer and the dumpsters get full of their non-sold CDs. So to say top 40 is a reflection of what is 'popular' is not actually correct. Like fashion, one person is trying to say that this is what it is the trend so buy it! Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't.
