I reckon the top 40 record buying demographic ( teenagers and people over 55 mainly ) are indeed sheep given the 'success' of the first Idol / Xfactor CD compared to previous sales of the same artist. I'd argue that for top-40's it cannot be any different as mass marketing is needed to get exposure for the volume of 'distribution' required. Withdrawal of marketing support and impact on subsequent CD's tends to support this imho.
