From the Where2sing.com forum:

MB: First of all, it's not the responsibility of the host to have a wide selection of songs. It's a good idea for the host to have a wide selection of songs because you're more likely to have a song that a given patron knows and likes. You never know who is going to be in the room afterall. It's the policy of Everything Entertainment to offer a wide variety of songs (multiple genres/multiple eras) and to allow singers to choose and sing whatever they like without censorship. Having said that, I think there would probably be a strong market for gigs that exclusively had an up-tempo list.

When you talk about singing ability, sure, it shouldn't matter what singing ability a patron has but the reality of the matter is that it does. There's a gig comment that was added recently for a venue in western sydney where the poster claims that roughly half of all the songs that will be sung that night are submitted before start time and the majority of them are poor singers. Now, regardless of how accurate this statement is or not, it can't be denied that from an entertainment point of view, two hours of bad singing will suck the life out of most people and it's more likely to be the good singers who don't go back as a result. It'd be a shame if there were gigs out there that experienced a form of natural selection of sorts whereby the bad singers drove the good singers away and all that was left was 4 hours of poor singing.
