FYI, just in case you've not been informed. From: support@iinet.net.au To: [suppressed] Sent: Fri Feb 4 9:55 Subject: Fwd: Re: Whitelisting query - Fwd: Welcome to the where2sing,com karaoke website (ref: 96272794) Hi, Thank you for your email. It sounds like where2sing.com does not have a correctly configured mail server, and this is why their messages are bouncing (however we would need an example of a bounce error to confirm this). As part of our continued efforts to fight spam, Network Operations has instituted a policy by which we only accept email from IP addresses with a reverse DNS entry. The reasoning here is that trojans and viruses can send email from any IP address. You don't need to be an email server to send email. Hence, any computer can start sending out hundreds or thousands of emails. This is one of the chief causes of spam. Our email servers now check what IP address the email is coming from and see if it has an reverse DNS entry. If it doesn't, we can't confirm the source as legitimate, so our anti- spam system (IronPort) will delete it. Here is an example of a possible error message: Error 554, Your IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx does not have a valid PTR record associated with it. This host will need to add a PTR records, also known as reverse lookup before it is able to send emails into the iiNet network. Please contact our 24 hour support team on 13 22 58 if you require further assistance. Kind regards, Cindy Customer Service Representative iiNet Support

Many thanks for contacting iNet, and sorry that you got their canned response, and particularly that they didn't even bother to test W2S against its MX record or reverse DNS entry. If they had, they would have found that where2sing.com properly resolves to 72.52.132.54 which is the IP address in the emails you've received from W2S. iNet says it needs 'an example of a bounce error' - duh, if an email bounces, then that means you're not going to have received it to be able to send to them. And iNet is your service provider, and therefore has access to all your emails. Anyway, when I send an email to myself, this is what I get - and that confirms the relationship between W2S and the stated 72.52.132.54 IP address: Return-path: Envelope-to: {email address suppressed] Delivery-date: Fri, 04 Feb 2011 19:58:13 +1100 Received: from fry.liquidweb.com ([72.52.132.54]) by dingo.aussiehost.com with esmtps (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PlHUa-0005l3-QA for [email address suppressed]; Fri, 04 Feb 2011 19:58:13 +1100 Received: from [49.124.100.230] (port=50116 helo=DavidPC) by fry.liquidweb.com with esmtpa (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PlHUU-0006kY-Kp for [email address suppressed]; Fri, 04 Feb 2011 03:58:07 -0500 Message-ID: <8379B73CF4ED4D57AC149C548540711A@DavidPC> Reply-To: "David" From: "David" To: <[email address suppressed] Subject: test iNet says: 'You don't need to be an email server to send email'. Actually you do, in that sending email is exactly what email servers do; if they didn't, they wouldn't be called email servers, and in fact we'd then have no need for email servers. What iNet means is that the sender's email address must have a DNS record that matches the domain (eg: where2sing.com) with the email server's IP address - as in where2sing.com matching 72.52.132.54 - and is the reason that hijacked servers sending out 'hundreds or thousands of emails' also correctly match the domain to the DNS record and thus happily get through to your in-box. The only emails that don't generally have a proper reverse DNS are those from your own personal computer which is using the mailserver of your service provider such as iNet (unless the domain name part of your email address matches theirs), and so their system is actually more likely to block out people's personal emails than it is to eliminate spam - but the reason that people like iNet do this is because they (incorrectly) believe that your personal Internet account is more likely to be hacked (less protected) than some website like W2S. And that's why you easily receive emails about Viagra, but struggle to get emails from W2S. Anyway, I appreciate your contacting iNet, and copying me their response. Unfortunately such providers are staffed by idiots, and there's little hope that anything useful will be done - the only hope is that their amateurish behaviour is ultimately rewarded by a loss of clients and going out of business.
