From the Where2sing.com forum:

Most pianolas required the pedals to be pumped but the very well to do had 'automatic' electric driven mechanisms where you only had to insert the roll then press a button for play. The words were exhibited on the rolls in perfect synchronisation with the music. MB - your oldtimer was absolutely correct and pianolas could be found in many country pubs, particularly in the Riverina District where I grew up. When the song choice was more 'modern' the Boomerang Song Books were used and a pianist played the pianola as a normal piano. Cost for the books were one shilling as I remember but the rolls were anything from one to two guineas. Some pubs had several hundred rolls and I can recall some very large private collections too.

When nothing else was available we used the combs with greaseproof paper (cheap gazoo!), spoons, pots and pans and one of my uncles made a violin from a cigar box. Music was always the main entertainment in the bush and everyone had a 'go' - just like karaoke today.
