From MB: 'Hallelujah'' is primarily about Sex and the Art of Sex (a relationship / fantasy).
MB's interpretation is but one of literally thousands of interpretation of this song (to me, it is almost as fat-fetched as Jeff Buckley's interpretation of it as 'describing / celebrating the female orgasm' LOL). The original poem on which the song is based has 15 verses, and depending which ones are included in a particular version will give it a different meaning.
KD Lang’s version was one which she recorded in her 2004 album entitled: 'Hymns of the 49th Parallel' (that alone tells her what her interpretation is). She performed her version at the 2010 Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics!!
Leonard Cohen himself never revealed what the song is all about. I did this research on its meaning many years ago, so that I can give the song justice when I do attempt it. I now interpret Rufus Wainright's version as 'one man's private conversation with his God ....'.

When Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, KD Lang performed her version of the song. It was reported that after hearing it, Cohen and his partner Anjani Thomas 'looked at each other and said … Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection'.
About the song, Leonard Cohen remarked that 'Hallelujah' (**) is a Hebrew word meaning 'Glory to the Lord'. Through most of the verses of the song, Leonard Cohen demonstrated that there are many kinds of 'Hallelujah's' in existence. “All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value' Leonard Cohen went on to say 'It's a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion'.
