| From the Where2sing.com forum: MB, the low monthly cost is due to buying phones outright, then using sim cards that give the lowest and most flexible pricing, especially as I rarely make outgoing calls. I have a Virgin sim for Australia from years ago, average pricing but with a zero monthly minimum so that often my Australian bill is only a few dollars (last month $1.53); Digi in Malaysia that's the most expensive at around $20 minimum a month, and as I have no friends I also make almost no calls (except to Samaritans CareLine at 3:30am, obviously..lol); China Telecom in China on a prepaid, no minimum, sim never expires, deal; Vodaphone in the UK on a prepaid, small monthly cost, plan. And I use WiFi wherever I can find it, thus using Starphucks despite their coffee - I guess therefore to be honest I should have calculated the $30 to include *phx which would push it from $30 to all in $150 a month.
My SatNav is TomTom with Australia/Malaysia/Singapore/UK maps, but it still makes me choose the exact road - what happens when the road either doesn't exist on the map, is misspelt, or you want to find some other place where you don't have an exact address? Or when you want to find the hotel that's changed its name, as with Google maps on your phone you can just search 'hotel' and see all the local ones on your map - and with their latest room rates in small boxes on the map, and with clickable links to book them online? When driving, SatNav for sure, until then, Google maps.
I keep telling friends not to buy phones on plans, not just because it's always (no, seriously, always) more expensive, but because you're then locked out of the excellent deals on sim-only.
