Milkman... I think all of us are just making up the rules as we go?...including the so called authorities
...I think many of us are basing our interpretations of the legislation (or lack thereof) on what we feel to be morally correct... but without any clear and difinitive legislation to go by.....because lets face it ...the legislation is seriously lagging behind the technology...until the legislators address the current issues the confusion will remain.

Make no mistake....if we... as a body ...continue to rock the boat and stir the legislators into action...we WILL end up paying far more by the the way of licences and fees than we do now.

From my point of view and understanding ..its all fairly simple...you are entitled to copy your own CDs as many times as you like and keep them at home...however you are only allowed to play those in public for which you have paid a yearly format shift licence...in other words if an operator copies a disc 10 times and plays it in 10 venues on 10 different rigs then he should pay the licence fee x10...there should not be any argument or confusion over that surely?

The Crunch comes for downloads ....are they legal...I think so....are you legally allowed to play them in public...I suspect you are ...but I have not seen any reference to this in any legislation anywhere...are you allowed to copy one download across 10 rigs?...morally you would have to say No....but I have NOT seen any reference to that issue anywhere so what and who is going to stop you?...its absurd to think that the Karaoke Police will come a knockin on your door to check your rigs and computers considering current outdated legislation.....If of course I started selling my newly copied 8000 songs for say $8000 to establishing Karaoke operators...I would be making some serious money and more than likely would come to the notice of the copyright police

Personally I think that we hosts will be better served by not becoming too pedantic about the whole issue...NOT spend too much time worrying about what other hosts have done or are doing...and just get on with it....Let sleeping dogs lay...or else pay considerably more for fees and licences than we do now...
