From the Where2sing.com forum:

Barry: I am extremely torn by this whole debate. Behaviour, by and large is created and re-enforced by a combination of their moral compass and what society allows them to get away with.

Let me use ticketed parking as an example. People buy a ticket for street side parking because they know if they don't, they may get a fine. I doubt many if any people would buy a ticket if they knew that the likelihood of getting booked was extremely remote. Is that the fault of the driver? Sure, but I know certain suburbs of Sydney where its suicide not to buy a ticket because parking inspectors are everywhere. They have successfully controlled behaviour by adequate policing. Now, you don't necessarily have to police it if you can control how usage occurs happens at the time of use. If the council was somehow able to clamp a car as soon as it parked and released it when the payment was paid, the whole question of compliance becomes irrelevant.

The sale of digital content, if we all had our time again, really should have happened the same way. Behaviour has set in and for better or worse, its going to take a herculean effort to change it. The only way forward, in my mind, is the path of least resistance. Somehow, digital content providers need to figure out a way to make the 'appropriate' use of their content more favourable than the inappropriate use of it. I think its been shown that policing its use doesn't work, restricting its use is going to be hard now, so what's left?

Back when I was young and more stupid than I am now, I used to download pirate movies. It was quick and easy. Last night, someone made a fb comment to me that I should check out a movie I'd never heard of. I watched the trailer on YouTube (illegally) and then bought it off itunes for $16. The whole process took less than 5 min. Would have taken double that to find a quality torrent for download.

In the end, behaviour is governed by what's easiest, not necessarily by what's cheapest.
