From the Where2sing.com forum:

David: I don't think you've understood what I've been saying. I've clearly said that one channel is missing from the final output, what that means to the orchestration differs dramatically from song to song. Sometimes, you can't tell at all, sometimes it's quite obvious. The example I like to give is Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet. It starts with a a bass line for the first 10 seconds or so, located on the left channel and then launches into guitar, located on the right. If you played this song when you are not sending the left channel to the speakers, you would be missing the bass line, if you played this song when you are not sending the right channel to the speakers, you would be missing the guitars. There's a Lenny Kravitz song that does something similar, don't recall which one. By and large though, the majority of songs have the orchestration panned equally across both channels.

In this instance, you're not getting a mono signal (both left and right channels through the one output), you're getting one half of a stereo input.
