David: Yes, that's correct. You can pretty much pan a signal at any stage before it leaves the mixer (and quite possibly even after it leaves the mixer). Normally, you would set your channel pan dials to 50/50, otherwise known at 12 O'Clock. You can set each channel pan dial any way you like and can be especially useful for audio diagnosis. To set the pan dial off axis would result in less signal going to one output (and therefore one speaker) and more going to the other.
