From the Where2sing.com forum:

Going to a Venue early, buying a meal, drinking and putting in a song or two and being rewarded with an additional song or two during the night, is far better for the Venue, than someone arriving late because they have eaten, drunk and spent their money at another Venue and possibly sung a song somewhere else as well.

The best rotation that I have ever seen, was at the Carlton Crest in Brisbane (many years ago).

The system was very simple ...... you wrote you name and song on the list (once only) and the list was always put out 20 minutes prior to the start.
This encouraged people to get there early and summit a song.

When the Show started the Host would take that list and go strictly by order and leave a new list there for people to fill out.
You couldn’t put a song down until you sang so this encouraged people to have a song already to put down as soon as they finished their song.
If a person didn’t have a song ready to go on the list, then guess what, you might find yourself further down the list than before. Procrastination was definitely not rewarded.

When the Host was nearly through the 1st list she would get the 2nd one and put out another and so on.
This system was fair and everyone knew that they couldn’t cheat the system.
Those that tried to put down 2 songs and out of order where quickly sorted out and missed a turn.
Best system I have ever seen.

The biggest drawback was there was very little interaction between Host and singers apart from when being called up for a song.
I have tried various systems and it really depends on how busy you are.

If you only have a dozen singers then a strict rotation works great.
If you have 30 to 50 singers, then a cut off after so many singers seems the best way and then inserting new singers into the pack does work.

The last method seems to still reward those that have come early and spent money and seems to satisfy their return custom.
