Rovics: So many heady questions... lol

As I've said before, those putting on a comp need to understand *why* they need to put a comp on and what they hope to achieve with it. After it has finished, how will its success be measured?

By the sound of it, you want to get people into the thinking that if they want karaoke, they go to the Bulimba Golf Club. Perhaps broaden the appeal a little bit and try and go for 'if you want some silly entertainment, go to Bulimba Golf Club'. Now, I acknowledge that people may take issue with me using the adjective silly to describe it but to me, if you're creating a fresh impression of what people can expect from a product or service but then you have to back it up. There's little point in plugging great music and great singing if the only people that turn up are tone deaf and want to bore you to tears. There's little point in a venue booking entertainment if people aren't being entertained...

So, starting from the base that you want to attract people who are going to contribute to a fun and entertaining evening, who and what is going to work against that? Perhaps have a special comp song list that only has the songs you want to be sung there. I like the idea of points weighted towards singers who choose songs out of their comfort zone. Maybe make a game out of it and you have a massive wheel with a whole bunch of songs on it, some they know, some the kinda know, some novelty etc. Spin the wheel and they sing what it lands on. Anything that creates a positive spectacle is always going to be a good thing.

At the end of the day you have to ask yourself, regardless of how well it's sung, is My Way and American Trilogy really going to contribute to the kind of atmosphere you're hoping to create?
