From the Where2sing.com forum:

Having seen how karaoke jukeboxes fail to attract, and how the difference (success) between one show and another is primarily the host, I like the idea that the host is the main conduit in any changes in karaoke format.

I can remember one kamikaze karaoke where the singers were actually good, and then, impressed by their ability to sing whatever was thrown at them, discovered that the host was picking songs that they knew but had not sung for a long time. So it makes me think that in a post-computer era where the host should have more time, a song selection more controlled by the host may make sense in better involving the audience.

As we have now distinguished rotation methods as being 'by rounds' or 'by request', I wonder whether karaoke itself might start to be 'by singer selection' or 'by audience request'.

Given that computerisation is making it easy to identify a singer with every song he can sing, and just as fast to select and play any, I can imagine a host taking a singer's card of 20 song choices, calling out a few and asking for votes, getting a quick show of hands or shout of approval for one, and then that's what that singer sings.

This would build on top of the established rotation, not challenge or undermine it, but it would better involve the audience. Would that keep, or even build, and audience? Who know...
