Depending on the venue you can get away with good hearted banter and a bit of Benny Hill/Dick Emery type double entendre, it seems to work for an older crowd.
When we were involved in the Karaoke Carousel at the Band Club one of the hosts issued a GONG to the non singers and told them to use it as they saw fit, it went down like a lead baloon.
