From the Where2sing.com forum:

There's a general norm for the human race, and, unsurprisingly, the majority of humans conform to this - so the answer is yes, generally we have approximately the same equipment. Or, err, cough, are you special is some way that might disprove this...lol?

When we talk of someone being 'talented' or 'gifted', we're referring to the outcome of their passion, practice and subsequent developed (learned) skill - we're no more imagining that this person could have been born, sat on their arse without singing a note for 50 years, and then suddenly got up and uttered, in their first ever song, a performance like Johnny Farnham? Are we? That would indeed be gifted, and unknown.

The Royal Family is financially gifted. That's what 'gifted' means.

Frankly, I can't see the logic behind a contention that a particular species, albeit in this case human, would be peculiar in that its abilities might be inherited rather than learned. Heart disease, brain malfunction, certainly these would reasonably be inherited rather than learned. But a skill - when in our society we place such an emphasis on learning, and indeed with specifically giving the same opportunity no matter racial background, gender or parental achievements - surely we would suspect the driver as being learned behaviour, long before we mused over the possibility of genetic influence?

If it's true that singers improve with practice, then we have the absolute proof.
