From the Where2sing.com forum:

In terms of the 'karaoke school' which began this discussion, there is no difference between a singer or karaoke singer as such. They are trying to get anyone to utilise their service.

As for China's definitions, I disagree. This is based on the premise that he has taken the definition of a singer provided by LB. Firstly, I think there are many people out there that are paid to sing in public that have no clue as to the things behind their art and also that are not even that good!!!

Secondly though, the 'school' would not be approaching those types of singers. It is trying to approach anyone that wants to sing - public or not and in that premise there is no difference between a karaoke singer or other type of singer apart from words on a screen!!!

A literal interpretation of someone that cuts hair is that they are a hairdresser! Regardless of regulatory requirements or not. Regulatory requirements are set up purely to give a standard in this regard, so that in general a hairdresser must obtain certain qualifications or training to be named as a hairdresser. However, in this field I do not believe that there is such regulation. In other fields where there is regulation, persons may not call themselves certain occupations unless they have obtained certain qualifications and are part of certain regulatory bodies. However, this does not stop people from using other occupational names to perform the same type of task.

In singing, there is no regulatory body and so no qualifications are necessary to call yourself a singer. So the person that sings in the shower has just as much right as Adele to call themselves a singer. Others would question the level of talent that they have in their art!
