From the Where2sing.com forum:

Barrytone, but that's just the point, as you've amply demonstrated. Everyone who 'opens their gob to pour out a melody' is absolutely not considered to be a singer. Again, the noun 'singer' is being confused with the verb 'sing'. 'A singer' confers a certain recognition of expertise or paid profession.

As I was saying earlier, to do something is not be the same as being someone of standing within those who do that. It's the same way as most in business, these days, is called an 'entrepreneur'. To the contrary, entrepreneurship is something demonstrated by only a few in business. Being 'a singer' is accomplished by only a few of those who sing. To say 'I sing' is not to say 'I am a singer'.

Should a karaoke singer be considered ' a singer'? There seems to be a considerable case, given authoritative definitions, against this. I'm with LB on this definition. I'm not 'a singer' - I'm a karaoke singer, and the word 'karaoke' is used as a qualification of the term 'singer'.

Does this mean that a karaoke school should be different to a general singing school? It follows that it does.
