From the Where2sing.com forum:

The antithesis of this is of course the 'bitchy' drag queen host who takes quite a lot of pleasure in degrading singers and other patrons for the amusement of the crowd; there are at least two venues in Sydney that operate on this model. I personally find the 'bullying one to amuse the many' style of show to be horrifying as it runs against a lot of my deeply held beliefs about what karaoke is to be people, at its core, a way to express yourself. However, it seems there are many people who not only don't have a problem with joining in on the ridicule (by being in the crowd) but seem to have no problem having the ridicule thrown their way by being a singer.

Is the fact that these shows (both successful as far as patronage is concerned) mean that there is a place in the market for such a show? It would seem so. Does it mean that there should be? I guess you answer that by asking yourself 'if your venue asked you to start operating under such a model, would you do it?' Now it becomes a lot more clear.

I wonder though about the singers who go to these shows. The non-singing patrons I can sort of understand; when you're not on the receiving end, laughing with the host doesn't feel so much like laughing at the recipient when done in a group and it's easy to miss that you're enabling the antics to continue (if after everything the host said tumbleweed rolled by, I'm sure there would be change quick smart). At first I wondered whether the singers simply had no other option, it was the only karaoke show they new or maybe they didn't know any better (that karaoke can be a safe environment instead of a way to point and laugh). I popped into a show on a Sunday a few months ago run by a W2S regular, very impressive show, great hosting and there was a regular from one of the drag queen shows. She knew what a great show looked like, she knew what great hosting looked like and yet she still went to the drag karaoke show. I don't know, maybe for some people, as long as there is a microphone and an audience, everything else is a distant third...
