| From the Where2sing.com forum: I can't speak to the culture or techniques of drag queens, however I imagine its not far from the dramatic device of masks where the wearer is able to adopt the personality of the mask and do and say things they normally wouldn't be able to say or do.
The easy way to use this power is to be a bitch and say and do everything that is negative. To use that power positively is march harder but so much more powerful. I had the pleasure of watching a drag queen go through an act in 1999. This was the year of Pauline Hanson and she spent a bit of time referencing it. It would have been very easy to hate on Hanson but this drag queen. She asked us to look at the world through her eyes. Her mantra was that you didn't have the right to hate her unless you really knew her. This if course dovetailed into the idea that you can't hate anyone unless you know them and that true tolerance is born from being able to look at the world through another's eyes. I came away feeling how I imagine people seeing George Carlin live must have felt. No bitchy drag queen has ever empowered anyone.
Now true, I'm not expecting a drag queen karaoke host to be that deep, but they are in a unique position to be able to spread some of that positivity and the ones who don't are waiting their chance.
