From the Where2sing.com forum:

MB: I think comp songs work best when the contestant chooses a song that a) plays to their strengths, b) is an anthem of some kind and c) has something of the unexpected about it. That last point is your golden egg and when done properly has the capacity to make the judges believe you've done a much better job than you actually did.

Australiana: Cat Empire - Hello Hello

Provided you can rap, this ticks all three boxes. As soon as the trumpets start, it always seems to kick people into party mode. You never hear it at comps and hardly hear it at karaoke and yet everyone seems to know it (or at least know of it). While everyone else is doing 'I Still Call Australia Home', you're putting huge smiles on everyone's faces and they can't pin down why.

International: Viva La Vida - Coldplay/Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons

Both of these songs have a great rhythm to them and they build to an anthemic 'Oooooh' towards the end. Hard for people not to sing along to them.

Ballad: Michael Buble - Sway

This song should be in every comp chaser's tool kit, it ticks every single comp box imaginable. It starts strong, not much instrumental, has several 'wow' moments (practice with the version you'll be using during the comp so you know exactly how many beats the silent bit towards the end goes for), shows off a powerful voice, builds to a climax and finishes strong.

Rock/Pop: I Got You (I Feel Good) - James Brown

Similar to Cat Empire, everyone knows it, people hardly ever do it. It's fun and funky but it also demands a commanding presence and swagger. Gives you a license to channel James Brown a little and be a little over the top.

Alternative/Blast From The Past: Light My Fire - The Doors

Provided you have something to do during the instrumental break in the middle, you can really get your sex appeal out with this one. Has a great aggressive 'wow' finish.
