From the Where2sing.com forum:

I have said all along that if a comp is run well and marketed accordingly to the local market that there would be good singers for free at a venue then a comp could do wonders. There have been comps where there has been packed houses in Sydney throughout the comp and that produces benefit to the venue in increased revenue. Yes, there are comps where no one else turns up and they don't make money for a venue. But a competition is also considered as a tax rebate event for a venue as they are 'giving back to the community' so although it may not produce much, the benefits in tax may be substantial. Sometimes a loss event is worth a lot as well. However, I know of many so called comp chasers that also regularly attend karaoke at different venues or at the same venue. I know some people that don't regularly attend the same venue and so are not considered regulars at any venue either. I say each to their own. I think that a well run and marketed comp could always produce benefit for a venue and host alike. Perhaps those hosts that think that comps are not revenue raisers have to look at how they run them perhaps before putting a blanket over all comps as 'bad' and not financially viable. Maybe with a bit of hard work in the marketing department a host could make their comp which even attracts the 'very good' comp chasers as one that people want to go and watch and therefore make money. Maybe!! Who knows ... worth a try rather than just saying they are not good events I would think.
