From the Where2sing.com forum:

I think you maybe overestimating the definition of 'karaoke' by saying that a musician who uses backing music is doing karaoke. Live music has used pre-recorded parts to it for umpteen years. Do we say that a lot of live electro-pop gigs that mostly use pre-recorded music in their sets and even some backing vocals mixed into it as well, ... do we say that is karaoke? Or eisteddfods that use pre-recorded music for their singers whether performing or in competition ... is that karaoke? I know you have a website advertising karaoke but I think your claims may be a bit rich David!
I think karaoke is a form of entertainment rather than just backing music. The entertainment involves a number of people getting up and doing cover songs. I think a singer singing numerous cover songs using backing music with or without their own instrument is not karaoke but is a live vocal performance. You know that person will be singing at the venue for a certain time period rather than karaoke which is mostly come on the night and see where you can fit in. You may get 1 or you may get 5 or 6 songs but you aren't going to know.
