From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi China. Just got home from one of my gigs. Thought I respond again to your message from a number of hours ago.

Situation 1: I'm sure you must have misunderstood this concept. What I meant here is: Quite often at the start of the night, or at the end of the night, (if the crowd has dwindled off), and you don't have a lot of singers, you need to entertain the patrons that are there.
In this scenario, which happens occasionally at a some of my gigs, the main part of the night - through the middle, has sufficient singers.

Situation 2: Further clarification: Some gigs rely purely on attracting a number of regular singers - when this occurs and the ration of singers to non singers is on the wrong side, (60-70% singers), you are in trouble. On the other hand, there is no problem in having a lot of singers, (40+ every time at one of my gigs), providing the ratio is smaller, and you have a large non-singing audience, (100+). This works well.

Variety Show vs Karaoke Show: I think you're missing the point here. My assertion here is that Cabaret, Trivia, Comedy, etc, can be used to fill in the slow spots only - not as a substitute. If the night is busy, none of these are necessary, but you have to be able to fill the gaps to keep people entertained.

As I said in my previous post, and I believe Malley Boy has also asserted, my opinions are based on the factual evidence of running successful long-term Karaoke gigs. Not an idealistic view of what I or others think a Karaoke gig should be!
