From the Where2sing.com forum:

peter m good to see ya putting in some imput again. i think you are missing mb point on caberet / comedy he means we entertain whoever is at the hotel whilst we get others to come up and sing, this only happens on slow nights, you and i have seen it in the city as well but in the country they really like a good drinking session before the dutch courage kicks in, country pubs are simualar to biker clubs they dont get involved immediately unless karaoke is the soul purpose of going out. you have been to many of my shows a few years back so you know that i certainly let the crowd get as many as they possibly can in. every hotel, club or event is different so i have to read the crowd and keep it going with a trick or two. and i use quite a few little tricks and it seems to have worked for me as an entertainer in bands and karaoke, and yes i still have a couple of very long standing shows in melbourne that have been going since before i even met you the secret to those ones is the crowd and hotel managers change every 6 - 12 months. also if the night is going to be slow in melb i utilize my emergency mail list that will bring in 10 - 30 singers within an hour. including some that used to be at the commercial years ago. i am sure you remember how i built the sphinx in geelong and a few other venues around but got screwed by undercutters. i still to this day have never dropped my price and am still getting plenty of work without doing very many hotels and with no advertisement as such like yellow pages or websites. i cant complain.
