From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi FB ..no of course I dont wear an in ear monitor....and as I said earlier most top artists have them especially made to fit their ear these days....and yes most larger performances have more than one sound engineer....I once helped set up (leg work only) for a Glen Shorrock show some years back...he was absolutely pedantic about his foldback sound.. and stage monitor set up.

Generally most bands of any note will use on stage monitors/side fill and often only have voice coming through on these ..otherwise the sound onstage would become too much of a mess...but karaoke is different to a band....if any singer is going to have any hope of holding a tune and staying in key... in particular for songs that they are not too familiar with....good realtime feedback is essential....I remain of the opinion that quality fold back is one of the most important tools for any karaoke show...and I am quite of the opposite view in that I believe that the majority of venues do need foldback and that often FOH speakers are placed in less than ideal positions so as to compensate for lack of foldback...IMO a Karaoke singer should be able to hear (in real time) exactly what it is their audience is hearing...likewise a host should also be able to hear the same whilst mixing
