From the Where2sing.com forum:

There's a reason why KWC is struggling in Australia (and Sydney in particular) and it's got to do with its financial viability. It costs money to organise and run these events. KWC can do a few things here, they can absorb the cost of organising it and aim to recoup the money elsewhere, they can charge the venue a fee and expect the venue to recoup the cost elsewhere (bar sales) or the entrant can be charged a fee. It sounds like the venue is charged the fee.

I have never entered the KWC comp so I can't speak from being an entrant and I've never been associated with an operator or venue who has staged a KWC event, so I can't speak from that side of the fence either. Having said that, if I were a venue, the first thing I'd be asking is 'how many more spending patrons am I going to get as a result of running KWC rather than just a regular karaoke night?'

It's no secret that karaoke comps have a bad reputation and some of that reputation is deserved. The only comp that I've been associated with that I thought actually added value to the venue was when I judged at the Cumberland Community Club and Mic Rophone picked up first prize (before he started hosting) with an outstandingly entertaining performance. A lot of comps though focus on rewarding a perfect voice which results in entrants aiming for the safest possible rendition. There is no risk involved which often means the fun gets sucked out it.

So, back to that question from the venue, are these people going to order the two for one cocktails at the bar? Are they going to get a jug of beer for themselves and their friends? Are they going to bring friends? Are they going to go there for their birthday party and do a few shots?

The KWC event is a great advertisement for the idea of karaoke within the community however in order to exist, it seems as though it needs to become something that is almost the opposite of what is great about karaoke - the ability to come out of your comfort zone and achieve something in 4 minutes that you may very well thought was beyond you.
