From the Where2sing.com forum:

I've been to shows that have music in the background and shows that don't (when I ran shows, I always would have music in between) provided the music has been carefully selected, I find that it keeps the pace coming off up-tempo songs and it can lift the room off a slow song. This is in addition to what you're doing on the mic.

With regards to songlists of hosts starting out, the only excuse for not being able to start your first show with 5000 songs is ignorance. I don't mean that in a negative way as with any 'business' venture, you have to do your research. You're not going to open up a hardware store and not know what all the drill bit sizes are or who the major wholesalers are (or maybe you are) and yet you have karaoke hosts start up with speakers that aren't appropriate and that have songlists made up of the photocopied back covers of the 5 CDGs they have bought.

You can buy Sound Choice's back catalogue reasonably cheaply as a digital database and you can also get digital packs from Chartbuster. These days they will sell you starter packs which will cover all the major crowd favourites across eras and genres for a couple of hundred dollars. You could literally start up a brand new karaoke business from scratch (laptop, speakers, mixer, mics, leads, singer monitor, digital database) for less than $3000 and it's not unreasonable to be able to make that back in 4 weeks. I'd be hard pressed to think of an industry that had such a high return on such a small set-up base (except maybe for trivia lol)
