From the Where2sing.com forum:

I have a real issue with 2 hosts singing back to back songs to start a round, I do think that's rude, but if you're getting through 3 rounds in a 3.5hr show then you've got between 12-15 singers per round (depending on how quickly the hosts can get through the rounds). Given 15 (and assuming every singer sings in each round), that means you've got bugger all people in the room, really. When I hosted, I would take myself out of the rotation once it got to about 8-10 however I feel as though my stance was pretty conservative and most hosts tend to think an hour rotation is fine before they take themselves out (and some don't take themselves out at all).

For me, the reason why a host should limit the amount of singing they do is because you have a limited number of singing slots and you don't want to have the situation where a singer misses out on their next song because you sang too much. From there, its a matter of degrees; I justified singing with less than 10 in the rotation on the argument that 10 people equates to 6 rotations and the difference between a 6th song and a 7th (or 5th song and a 6th) is splitting hairs. The difference however between 2 and 3 is more dramatic.

I'm going to say something controversial here so brace yourselves. Hosts sing too much because their audience lets them. If Karaoke Darwinism (where only the best survive) was truly at play, then crap karaoke shows would fall away and only the best would be supported but the truth is that this is far from the case. Mediocre and indeed poor karaoke is supported each and every week and these shows are poor *because* of their support. There's a show I know that runs on a Friday night that people complain about; the host sings too much, the host is rude, the staff are rude, the sound is crap. Yet every single week I see photos go up on FB, posted by the people who complain that continue to go to this show. Who's fault is it that its a bad show? The host? Sure, a little bit but I point the finger squarely at the people who go to this show as the reason why its so bad (in their words).

Reward good shows with your patronage and you will have more good shows to go to.
