From the Where2sing.com forum:

MB: A bit too idealistic I'm afraid. Good quality songs is simply not going to be enough to stop the freeloading because of the reason they do it. People steal digital content (karaoke songs, music, tv shows and movies) because it's easier than the alternative. A lot of that 'easier' element comes down to time. In an impatient world, we want the content now because the desire for it is now. In an impatient world, we don't want to satisfy the now impulse by waiting a week after picking, packing and shipping.

Back in 'the old days', if I wanted a song on my mp3 player, I had to put my CD into my computer drive, rip it to my hard drive (sometimes taking an hour to do it), rename all the files and then copy the songs to my player. Sorry, too hard, much easier to jump onto Limewire, Napster, Kazza etc and download it. Sure its free, but you get it now. Once this idea of instant gratification took hold, a value was assigned to it: $0. I have no doubt that if digital music downloads came up right when the first mp3 players hit the shelves, then the value we would assign to the process would be what were comfortable in paying. They could have gotten away with $2 per song and we would have thought that was a bargain. Now though, the industry has to compete with a perceived market value of $0.

With regards to the karaoke industry, all that needs to happen is that the paid model be several degrees easier to use than downloading it for free and you'd be on a winner. Good quality tracks is not what will win over the freeloaders, they're looking for a One-Click process.
