| From the Where2sing.com forum: It's very shortsighted to only take the bar report into consideration when assessing entertainment for a venue like chatswood. Especially a membership based venue, a more wholeistic approach needs to be taken. As an example, the people who go on wednesday may not drink a lot being mid-week but may come again later in the week and drink, eat, play pokies etc. Without the karaoke on wednesday, people like Tom may simply not go back to the venue at all and the club loses more money overall than just a possible loss on wednesday night. Especially in sydney, club managers don't seem to grasp the concept of generating good will with their patrons and RSLs etc just seem to think pokies alone will keep them in business. I think there's more than a few venues that are finding that isn't the case anymore.
Another example, one of my old venues which doesn't want karaoke anymore now has only 1 night per week making a profit. They've been ignoring their locals so 6 nights a week, the locals go to the pub across the road. In two weeks time, another venue is putting on a similar event as the only profitable one, on the same night. The wednesday crowd who are sick of the new owners/managers are about to abandon the place altogether and flock to the new venue.
My point being that bar takings only tell a small story and looking after your regular punters and locals is the real key to making a profitable venue.
