From the Where2sing.com forum:

The trouble with basing something on Google Maps is that it ties the user to a very large download of data, and being a plugin is entirely outside the control of the programmer regards caching - in other words, fine only if you're permanently online. In fact, relying on cobbling together others' programmes always gives this problem of reliance on something outside your control. But I agree that some map-based entry to listings is required, as is shown by hotel booking websites which now mostly offer this popular facility, and it seems to me that a simple map that can be easily saved on the device to provide the basic map for position of all gigs in any given area is what's needed, with Google Maps being used only when a particular gig is selected and the device is online.

And as you say, the map needs to function in the same way as that on hotel booking websites, perhaps somewhat better, in that the clicking of criteria in a side panel selects/deselects that criteria - and changes the gigs displayed on the map. Overlay friends who are logged into various places, and that provides the sort of socio/informational tool that is needed by anyone going out at night.

I see a map as the first-run selection tool, its two axes being distance and time - by which I mean the two parameters which are fixed are position and time, everything else such as type of entertainment (karaoke, trivia, open-mic, bands, opera, theatre, conventions, sporting events, club meetings, fund-raising) and facilities (alcohol, food, transport, parking) and details (songlist size, trivia question genre, open-mic intruments, sporting event sport, type of club) are not fixed, could be selected/deselected by anyone - and thus a map would serve as an excellent entry point. After such an entry point, a list of previously tagged gigs could show their next place/time, and from there could be attached feedback from others, links to similar events, etc.
