From the Where2sing.com forum:

I'm always interested by the notion that a customer, complaining about a service or making some comment, is told to become that supplier before he is judged as having a valid opinion. Where do you think the next generation of suppliers come from, the innovative suppliers who disrupt the existing model by providing something revolutionary - these do not come from the realms of the already existing suppliers, but normally from an outsider who has viewed the status quo, seen the flaws, found a solution, and represents a wholesale improvement.

Who is likely to have the better informed opinion - the host who spends most of his karaoke nights at his own gigs, or the lone singer who has no affiliation to any host but roams widely and also chats to a wide range of other singers? As a concrete example, W2S is the product of an occasional singer who disrupted the old 'write your gig details in some forum' style of website - that singer knowing little about websites at the time, and thereby producing something quite different from what had gone before.

I understand the agenda behind such comments, in that a host is protecting his current business - or rather, believes he is - by the head-in-the-sand (and confrontational) approach, but this is the way that disc-based hosts lost out, and lost out quickly, to the computer based; as in, where are the 'All About Karaoke's' these days in the dominance of such as Everything Entertainment and 4U2Sing?

I'd therefore suggest that the culture of 'only the industry knows what's best for the industry' is one of the most dangerous around.
