Absolutely agree with LB, though also agree BT that it's a valid point you have. Copyright laws are hopelessly out of touch with the modern reality, their being really only a fairly recent invention and made to ensure that originators of content get a fair reward for their work and a reason to produce more, their work originally forming the basis to education and thus essential to the well-being and furtherance of society. But that's out of touch in a society where a day's creative work can provide an income protected by copyright equal to the salary of others and equivalent to a decade's work. In other words, it would make more sense for copyright now to be handled under the normal competition rules of commerce and industry, especially as the recipient of 90+ % of copyright fees is not the originator/artist, but is commercial companies.

However, it is those commercial companies that are the real threat, their financial muscle and government connections making them potent in their protection of their income via the copyright laws. Remember that MIPI is just another business, employed by APRA to serve its business - APRA being styled as an agency but in fact working as a commercial entity with annual income far over the $100million point, and employing a small army of lawyers. Should we be concerned with such entities in such a situation? For sure, these entities are business people on a fast buck trading off the backs of legitimate artists, and not slow in using copyright law to protect their profits - in the same way as we see Apple and Samsung fighting for monopoly over the smartphone market.

Now, what would be interesting would be a completely new body, web based and thus at minimal cost and directly representing the artists, charging a very small amount in copyright that benefited the industry, and passing almost 100% back to the artists. But I wonder whether there are many small independent artists now left, with music being produced in 'music factories'?
