To put this into perspective, the most watched tv show last week in Australia was Anh Does Vietnam on Ch7 which took in 1.68m viewers. Compare this to the most watched YT video (Gangham Style which has 29m views (online for 2 weeks). About as many people watched Anh Does Vietnam than have watched Justin Bieber getting hit in the head with a water bottle. More people have seen the clip of Alan Jones at the Young Liberals function than listen to his show each day. More people have seen the 15min clip of Julia Gillard's speech during Question Time on Tuesday than watched an evening news program this week.
In my mind, you don't need conventional media delivery platforms such as a tv show to bring your product to the masses, in fact, you can do considerably better without it, however you need to cut through the noise. Would Guy Sebastian be where he is now without Australian Idol? However, would Gotye's Someone I used To Know have sold so well had the music video not gone viral?
