David: There's a big difference in my opinion between 'businessly' unethical practices of the big tech players (I switched away from iPhone when they upgraded their OS to force me to upgrade my phone) and commentary from business owners about social issues. When so called authority figures (radio commentators and business leaders) make comments which undermine social progressiveness, then they re-enforce and excuse anti-social behaviour in society. It's not possible to say that Alan Jones' comments leading up to the Cronulla riots caused them but they certainly acted as enablers, allowing the perpetrators that day to do what they did with clear conscience because they had been given the tick of approval. The discrimination arabs and muslims face in Australian society has many sources but the comments Alan Jones made on that day and made prior and since then have helped to enable that discrimination. He has helped foster the illusion that such attitudes are mainstream.
So while a case could be made that Amazon patenting the one-click button and forcing other businesses to license it is dodgy and unsportsman like, its hardly changing the way we see minorities, women or seeking to change the outcome of elections.
