I also don't think a business owner falls into the category of an 'authority figure' on all subjects just because he deals professionally in one. As long as he runs his business well, which in the case of Jaycar seems to be the case, I think it's fair to view his business as a standalone transaction platform. I haven't bought an Apple device for 20+ years largely because I don't approve of Apple's closed system or litigious nature. I dislike the way that Microsoft destroys competition and innovation, but I don't really have an easy alternative to Windows. If Alan Jones had a particular opinion on the brand of motorcycle I ride, it wouldn't influence me because I don't consider him as having a valid technical opinion in that field.
Where do we draw the lines? Perhaps even that comes back to personal opinion. You avoid Jaycar. I'll avoid Amazon.
