Wanabsinger: The only legitimate reason that I can think of is how the cabling runs. You want to keep the length of leads to a minimum and you preferably want them travelling a path that does not constitute a trip hazard. When I was hosting, I would tape down my leads but it can be an extreme hassle when it adds an extra 10 or even 15min to your set up (then of course you have to rip it all up again) so sometimes you set up in such a way so that you don't have to do that.

Having said that, you ideally want to position yourself so you hear the mix really well but if that's not possible, you at least want to position yourself so that you can be easily accessible to the patrons who want to come up. Setting up *on* the stage is usually a really bad idea for this reason.

A lot of hosts though just don't know any better and it doesn't necessarily occur to them to position themselves differently to make things easily.

I saw a few photos go up on FB tonight where you could see how the host had set up. Now, this guy has been around since the dawn of time, certainly twice as long as I have hosted and I found his set up position really odd. All the way up the back and it looked like you had to walk around behind the singer to get to him. He might have had a reason for it, who knows.
