Hi guy's thanks for your comments, first off, LB, yes cable length may have an impact on the loss of signal going through the cables but it would be minimal, depending on the quality of the cable. making sure there is no trip hazard is always paramount for the patrons and also the host and or operator. I totally agree with not the setting up on the stage, I do not want to see the host and or operator scratching their arse or picking their nose when I am trying to watch and listen to the singer. Any movement on a stage or around the singer distracts from the overall performance and should be avoided.

MB, most operators use cordless mics and can control the show from almost anywhere in the venue, even in the loo, if need be lol. On my mixer all I need to do is hit a button to silence a singers mic, if need be, which I have had to do from time to time, just to set them on the straight and narrow so to speak.

just to put the record straight, yes I have hosted before and I have encountered all the problems associated with small and big venues. The only time I have not operated alone was when the boss of the company was hosting and I was the operator/mixer.

To me, everytime someone gets up to sing, I see it as their time, it is their moment, and it is my job to make sure they sound as good as I can make it for them. What really annoys me is when some operators and or hosts just sit back and do not care.

Most of the time I try and set up where I am out of the way but can have control the show. Once I am happy with the backing music and singers mix I can move around and interact with the patrons.

what really urks me is when I go to a venue and the music produced gives me a headache and that is usually caused by what I call the 'Barbara Streisand affect' to much mid range in the mix, glass shattering' and that is usually caused by the operators not going out and listening to what the audience hears, just pure laziness. it sounds great behind the speakers, but the FOH sux.... I made a comment on a site recently and the reply was 'if we do not know, we can not fix', what a cop out, if the operator went out and listened to what the audience heard they would be aware of the problem.

I went to a venue last friday and I was impressed by the host/operator, the mix was adjusted differently for every singer and the music and sound produced was really nice to listen to. I might add that the host and equipment was situated to the front of the speakers and just to the right of the singers. Again I have to agree with LB, this venue had the speakers situated behind the singers so there was no need for a monitor/foldback. When I was able to sing I could actually hear what the audience could hear

Hey LB, want to set up a karaoke company. LOL, we could call it 'Kick arse Karaoke' (KaK)
