Shazzy Deal...
I attended a kind of jam session that a band would put on weekly for instrumentalists and singers to join in on many moons ago. First time was a shambles. My debut on electric guitar (both personal and public at once) didn't go so great and so nervous was I that I was barely audible singing Queen's 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love.' It was particularly embarrassing as there were a LOT of great performers there that night and I had just totally wasted their time. Following week, I rocked up as a simple singer (rather than singer AND guitarist) and nailed Elvis' 'Heartbreak Hotel' and thus won the band's (and the audience's) respect which brought with it a great feeling of relief.
Sure it was a standard song but the feeling of singing with a band is much different from that of singing to pre-recorded music. You can feel the sound vibrations as well as hear it with a band. The music seems so much more alive. Some sound systems can almost recapture that sensation but I think for the most part, venues wouldn't allow the necessary level of decibels to truly capture the effect of live music.
It's not about getting up on stage with people you don't know that makes you nervous. It's wondering if you'll be able to sing to what they play or if THEY will be able to play to what YOU sing!
If this band karaoke is anything like that experience and if you're up for a test of your nerves, I thoroughly recommend it because not only is it a great experience in itself but it gives you a better appreciation for music and performers all round. Better appreciation leads to greater understanding and THAT leads to making the world a better place - if only at the personal level.
That being said, still support your local KJ! They still need your patronage! Flick between the 2 if you should get hooked. Whilst the stage experience is good, if you're a mover like me, then you'll also feel a little inhibited if there is barely standing room for you in front of the band. Likewise, I'd dare say the patrons will be rather different from those at a recorded music karaoke gig. The live music scene tends to attract a different crowd so the atmosphere will be different accordingly but it's great to expand one's horizons!

Rusty...
If you're watching this space, good luck down in Adelaide, mate!! I hope it all works out for you down there. Sorry I didn't wind up making it to the ICC in time to see you before you departed.
Au revoir, monsieur. Bon chance! (translation for the Frenchily-challenged: See you later, mate. GOOD luck!!)
