I agree that there is potential cross over and that w2s might one day be a true 'where2sing' rather than just w2sk. Perhaps it might be an idea to poll users to see what they want from an open mic listing?
Here's what I would want to know from a listing:
1) Standard location info from karaoke gig listing (venue name/address, company running, running time et al)
2) Original music or covers (or both)?
3) Any equipment BYO? If so, what?
4) Personnel to operate equipment?
5) [Probably most importantly] Personnel to play musical instruments?
I don't (and I'd say most singers on here can't) play an instrument so it would be largely redundant to rock up to a venue that has no BYO requirements, only to be told that the guitar's in the corner, have fun... I'd say most people would want to sing along with an in-house band, but I'm just guessing here...
6) Do I need to book a slot?
7) Is there a charge of some kind?
I think unless the listing was pretty thorough on explaining what open mic nights required of the punter, there would be a high probability of it being a rude shock to the person and may sour the experience.
