OPEN MIC NITE : Sammo of MALAYA has this in the pipeline once again. Being a venue operator he is approaching it with business in mind. The deal that I got arranged for him with a virtual online recording company (vhp Records) wasn't successful - where vhp Records use MALAYA to showcase their artistes.
The concept at MALAYA for their open mic nite is this - ANY ONE can have the stage for 25 minutes, if she / he can bring in 7 paying customers for a $35pp set banquet menu (the performer gets his meal for free). Performances are 'unplugged', cabaret style, backing tapes or karaoke style. The idea is to only have 6 performers for the night (3 hours of performances, with another hour or two to mingle and mix), and therefore a guaranteed crowd of at least 6 X 8 = 48 people. Others can attend to at $35pp.
Performers have a live venue, and can showcase their talents infront of an audience. They are also allowed to set up shop to self-promote with their CDs, promo material, etc. MALAYA gets a crowd in on an otherwise quiet Mon or Tues night.
I am putting together the promo material for the night for MALAYA - to be launched after Xmas, during the Jan / Feb after end-of-year festive season lull. As between now and Xmas there's so much happening - Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne, with planned Cox Plate, Caulfield and Melbourne Cup Calcuttas / Phantom Calls at MALAYA, and every Fri and Sat normal karaoke nights will be chockers with office functions, and hopefully they will be successful with their 'Footloose 80s' / 'Bringing On Back The Good Times' Thurs nights too with the 5-piece Mr Meaner, incorporating live-band-karaoke.
