From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi Wolf, Yes the operater of the sound is one ingredient , but there is many other things that goes into sound to make it good , room is one . number of people is another , good quaity equipment & equipment that marries well together is another, operater who is willing to work there sound from singer to singer / disc to disc is most important & having a good 'ear' for sound , i've found with a lots of hosts ,that they become lazy and basically set the sound for there voice and then just push the main volume up and down all night and not work the bass /mid / trible from singer to singer , cheap mic ./ cheap speakers / cheap amps and most sadly CHEAP Mixers , if people buy cheap and nasty equipment the sound will always be cheap & nasty , 5,6,7,8,9 hunderd dollar speakers (and there abouts) will not deliver a outstanding sound no matter who operates them .....i'm sorry if this upsets anyone but the true facts are facts./
