From the Where2sing.com forum:

Dear harpoet,

I was told a story by a gent who was in the Australian Opera company, about a fellow who was originally tone deaf. He was fortunate enough for his wife to be a singing teacher. After many years, she taught him to sing one note at a time, and with perserverance, he became a better singer than her, and was accepted into the opera company. This only goes to show that determination and hard work are the keys (no pun intended). I believe that the most important thing to have is the ability to self critique and to listen to constructive criticism. This is one of the thrills of karaoke, recognising the improvements in yourself and in others, and having fun whilst striving to achieve this.

It is on this note that I wish to pose a question to the forum. Should a compere be blantantly insincere? Should a singer be told what a great voice they have when it is obvious to all that they don't? I compered for a few years and always complimented every singer, whether it be on choice of song, attempts made etc, but I could not bring myself to make comments on their vocal ability unless I truly believed it to be so. It takes great courage to get up and have a go and that alone deserves a rousing round of applause but many singers, especially newcomers, treat their host's word as gospel, so when they are told what a fabulous voice they have they believe it to be true. I know of a singer, who was constantly told by their regular host how talented they were, who, a number of years ago, entered a large competition that attracted many professional singers. The judges, which comprised of professionals in the industry, proceeded to point out his many vocal & performance shortcomings. His response was that they knew nothing, his host and regulars had told him for years how great he was. I recently saw this person, after nearly 4 years, and could not see any improvement whatsoever. I am not totally blaming the host but I cannot help but believe, that perhaps with realistic compliments and some 'helpful hints' (as harpoet mentioned), that this singer may have improved and not become stagnant.

My apologies for my long-windedness but again I pose the question, can a host go too far?
