From the Where2sing.com forum:

Addict... do you think that there's danger that people believe the way you sang your last song is the pinnacle of your ability, and that their applause and encouragement is more sympathy than appreciation? And, if this is being applied to a song you are singing for the first time, that this might be just a tad embarrasing?

My greatest enjoyment of someone's singing comes from their demonstration of mastery of a particular song which they also obviously enjoy singing - and bearing in mind that I will watch probably more than twenty songs for every one that I sing myself, I admire those who respect my attendance by investing due practice in their songs, and I often wonder about those who are 'trying something new' and in particular whether there is a certain arrogance in subjecting a large audience to an unpracticed and therefore almost always somewhat poorly sung song?

James, it sounds as though you follow what I hope to see at karaoke - someone singing songs that are rarely sung by others, but which - importantly, in my book - have indeed been practiced privately or previously so as to respect the time and attention of your audience.
