From the Where2sing.com forum:

It's a rare thing for me to sing a song that I either don't know well or haven't practiced before hand. I think it started with a rediculous lack of confidence in any ability I had and then was replaced by a fear of judgement that, indeed, this was the best I could do. Now, it's more just perfectionism on my part. I usually only do new stuff untested when there's a small comfortable crowd and the rotations are short. I had the opportunity of doing this at Hippo's last Thurs, every song I did was one I had never done before. Of the dozen or so songs I did, one was something I was proud of, a few went ok and a bunch of others just aren't in my range... lol

I've been going through a bit of a Pearl Jam phase lately, singing Black and Elderley Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town. I tried Jeremy once (a song which is like a rollercoaster ride vocally) and I just got lost, I couldn't follow where Vedder was taking it so I never bothered. Then a beautiful woman asked me to do it one night, and not being able to resist the opportunity to make a fool of myself in front of beauty, I had a go and I was quite surprised by the result. I've been practicing since then because I think it'll sit nicely in my repetoir.

I personally think MA could benefit a great deal with private practice on songs to be tried for the first time, only because of the natural hurdle. MA, I've often seen you come down after a song and say that you didn't think it went well and that you won't do that song again. I wonder, as David alluded to, whether people just assume you always sound like that... Food for thought :D
